Transfer Target Matchup - Van Dijk to Chelsea

After handing in a transfer request, it only seems a matter of time before the Southampton stalwart finds a new team. Liverpool have been heavily linked, but their abrasive approach a few months ago may discourage Southampton from doing business. It's unlikely, but a possibility. Chelsea’s defensive frailties and Gary Cahill’s growing age may also convince Van Dijk of the potential to push himself into the first team.

It is no doubt that Chelsea lack depth in the centre back position, after selling Ake and letting Zouma leave on loan. Cahill and Luiz, despite outstanding performances last season, are approaching the ends of their careers. Christensen has made a few appearances, but has failed to inspire much stability. The 21 year old does seem to have potential, but Chelsea has rarely been a team to allow youngsters to find their feet – the demand for results is simply too great.

Van Dijk’s mentality is something of a question mark however: his earlier coaches Dick Lukkien and Pieter Huistra have noted his lack of motivation, and Van Dijk has been prone to lash out. The passion will not worry Conte, but the lack of discipline might. It is no secret Conte demands everything from his players, and if he feels someone is not giving their all, you will not need to read between any lines. Gianluigi Buffon has paid testament to that fact already.

Van Dijk’s also seems to be a perfect blueprint to fit Conte’s brand of defenders.  He has height and strength, but is also quick on his feet. Moreover he has proved himself capable of marshalling the Premier League’s best already. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet, and had the greatest long pass accuracy of any central defender last season.

The match against Burnley exposed two key problems with Chelsea’s defence:
  1. Replicating the stability of last season, which saw them win 13 straight games, will be extremely unlikely.
  2. With the return of Champions League football and exits of Ake and Zouma, Chelsea are woefully lacking in depth.

Overall, Van Dijk’s technical and physical ability would no doubt be an asset to any team; in Chelsea’s case he would provide some backbone and depth to Chelsea’s back three, as well as a psychological boost for players who already look tired.

The £50million price tag may have seemed ridiculous four months ago, but this summer transfer market has altered the reality of player values – conversely he now seems value for money, and would no doubt be a welcome catalyst to invigorate Chelsea for the challenges ahead.
